Montana Learning Center — Rice Astronomical Park

On the dark shore of Canyon Ferry Lake, this education center runs three observatories collectively called the Mike and Lynn Rice Astronomical Park, including a 32-inch telescope billed as the largest public-use scope in Montana. Public "Beyond the Big Sky" stargazing nights run one weekend a month from June through September, each opening with a talk from a guest astronomer before you look through the scopes. You can also book a private 90-minute "Create Your Own Star Party" (May through October, weather permitting) led by the center's executive director. The lakeside site sits well away from city light domes, so the Milky Way is genuinely vivid.

The move: Reserve a summer stargazing slot, listen to the opening sky talk, then take turns peering at planets and nebulae through the big 32-inch telescope over the lake.

Where: Montana Learning Center, Canyon Ferry Lake, near Helena, MT (about 80 miles from Butte)
