Firebird ("Disco Chicken")
Envisioned by French-American artist Niki de Saint Phalle, this 17.5-foot, 7,500-pound bird creature is coated in over 7,500 individual tiles of mirrored glass, river stones, and colorful stained glass. Sitting outside the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art, locals affectionately know the glittering monument as the 'Disco Chicken.'
The move: Walk down Tryon Street after sunset when city lights catch the thousands of reflective mosaic facets, then stand directly under its arched, mirror-tiled legs for a striking photo.
