Chicago Mosaic School
Founded in 2005 by mosaic artist Karen Ami, this is North America's premier institution devoted to the mosaic arts, grown from an eight-person studio gathering into a program of 150-plus classes taught by over 30 mosaic masters. Now based in Edgewater at 1127 W Granville Ave, the studio, the Gallery of Contemporary Mosaics, and CMS shop are filled with intricate tile and glass work; visits are best arranged around classes, workshops, or exhibition openings rather than dropping in. It is a hands-on, locals-know corner of Chicago's craft-art world.
The move: Sign up for a beginner mosaic workshop and walk out with a small tile piece you made together.
