Entry No. 58 — the Chicago file — filed under: after-dark
Doane Observatory at Adler Planetarium
Tucked behind the Adler on a spit of land jutting into Lake Michigan sits the largest-aperture telescope available to the public in Chicago, a 24-inch reflector installed in 2020 that gathers thousands of times more light than the naked eye. On clear Wednesday nights staff roll it open and let visitors peer at planets, star clusters, and the cratered moon, all while the downtown skyline glows across the water. Some internal parts of the instrument were 3-D printed and built from carbon fiber.
The move: Go on a clear Wednesday night, take turns at the eyepiece on the lakefront point, then walk the deserted Museum Campus with the skyline reflected in the water.
📍 Before you go Weather-dependent; open most clear Wednesday evenings tied to Adler at Night. Check the Adler calendar before going.
