Entry No. 20 — the Chicago file — filed under: art-immersive
Intuit Art Museum (Henry Darger Room)
After a $10 million renovation, this museum dedicated to self-taught and outsider art reopened in May 2025 across three floors. Its centerpiece is a dramatic, semi-immersive recreation of reclusive janitor-artist Henry Darger's one-room Lincoln Park apartment, complete with his actual furniture, Remington typewriter, religious objects, and source materials. You descend a stairwell directly into the relocated room on the basement level, stepping inside the private world where Darger secretly produced a 15,000-page illustrated epic. Nearly half of all visitors come specifically to see this space.
The move: Wander the outsider-art galleries together, then descend into Darger's recreated room and try to make sense of one stranger's secret universe.
