Intuit Art Museum — Henry Darger: The Room Revealed

A museum dedicated entirely to self-taught and outsider artists reopened in 2025 with a two-floor, long-term installation that recreates 75% of the actual boarding-house room where reclusive janitor-artist Henry Darger secretly painted his 15,000-page fantasy epic for 40 years — his real furniture and fixtures rebuilt, with animated projections in the windows and a wall of digitized ephemera he hoarded.

The move: Walk the Darger galleries together, then wander the rest of Intuit's rotating outsider-art shows — it's a genuinely strange, quiet counter-program to the Art Institute a mile away, open Wed–Sun with extended hours the third Thursday of the month.
