Entry No. 38 — the Chicago file — filed under: outdoor-weird
Promontory Point
A man-made peninsula jutting into Lake Michigan, ringed by the lakefront's last surviving original limestone-block revetment from the late 1930s. The rough stone steps slope straight down into the water, and locals have fought for years to save them from being replaced with concrete. The grassy field, council-ring fire pit, and field house give it the feel of a small wild headland inside the city.
The move: Pack a picnic and sit on the limestone blocks at the Point's tip where the steps drop into Lake Michigan at sunset.
