The Wormhole Coffee
The gimmick announces itself immediately: a DeLorean parked inside the front of the room, with arcade cabinets, stacked VHS tapes, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles memorabilia filling every remaining surface. What saves it from being a theme restaurant is that the coffee program is genuinely fussy — beans come from Halfwit Coffee Roasters, the house cold brew is notoriously strong, and the baristas will talk about it longer than you asked. Pastries come in from Fritz Pastry, including doughnuts, and there is cereal if you want to complete the Saturday-morning bit. It runs 7am to 9pm daily, so it functions as a night spot as much as a morning one, and it stays loud and full on both ends. The 1980s decor is played straight rather than winked at, which is why it has lasted on Milwaukee Avenue this long.

The story
The DeLorean is parked inside, in the front of the room, and it sets the terms immediately: arcade cabinets, stacked VHS tapes, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles memorabilia, and enough hung and shelved 1980s ephemera that the walls stop reading as walls. None of it is ironic set dressing at arm's length. It is played straight, assembled with the specific density of a collection rather than a purchase order, and that is the difference between a room and a concept.
The reason it is not a theme restaurant is the coffee. In 2012 the Wormhole's team started their own roasting company, Halfwit Coffee Roasters, explicitly to give baristas and drinkers "a panoramic understanding of coffee, from the first leaf to the final sip" — Halfwit now roasts, trains and sells wholesale across Chicago, and it began as this cafe's side project. So the beans behind the counter are the house's own, the cold brew has a reputation for being unreasonably strong, and the person pulling your shot will talk about origin longer than you asked. Pastries and doughnuts arrive from Fritz Pastry. There is also breakfast cereal, if you want to complete the Saturday-morning bit.
It runs 7am to 9pm daily and serves no alcohol, which makes it one of the few rooms in Wicker Park that works equally well as a 9am desk and a 9pm date. The two crowds barely overlap: laptops own the daylight and give up tables slowly, and the evening arrives louder and more caffeinated. The one operational catch is that the shop's own website has lately been returning server errors, so the phone is the channel that works.
What it's like
Walk in past the DeLorean and expect to lose thirty seconds just looking. Order at the counter — coffee runs a couple of dollars, the cold brew is the house flex, and if you are here after 6pm get the doughnut too. Seating is first-come and it fills; during the day much of it is held down by laptops and long sessions, and the room turns over faster in the evening. The arcade cabinets are free to walk up to, which means the etiquette is arcade etiquette: one game, then let the next person on. It gets loud, so this is not a talk-quietly date. Take the Blue Line to Damen or the 56, 72 or 50 bus. Milwaukee Avenue parking on a weekend night is a hobby, not a plan.
The move: Show up around 7:30pm, split a cold brew and a doughnut, play whatever cabinet is free until the caffeine lands, then walk five minutes up Milwaukee to Myopic Books at 1564 N Milwaukee and buy each other something off the other person's least-likely shelf.
