Hood County Jail Museum
“a disembodied voice shouting Leave!”
This 1885 limestone two-story jailhouse operated as Hood County's only lock-up until 1978 and still holds its original iron cage cells and a tower gallows that was never officially used. Paranormal investigators have recorded audio of a man growling, a slamming cell door, and a disembodied voice shouting "Leave!" — and a sheriff's badge once vanished from a sealed glass case with no explanation on the security tape.
The move: Visit on a Friday–Sunday afternoon (1–4 PM, cash only, $2/adult) to walk the original iron cage cells and the gallows tower, then extend the spookiness into the evening by joining one of Granbury's ghost tours that include the old jail as a stop — the courthouse square is just steps away and easily walkable after dark.
📍 Before you go Tucked half a block north of the historic courthouse square's northeast corner, the limestone jailhouse is easy to spot once you're on the square — its fortress-like stone facade stands apart, and locals will point you to "the old jail" if you ask. The square has plenty of free street and lot parking, so park there and walk over. It's a small, volunteer-run museum open only a few afternoons a week, usually weekends, and cash-only for the modest admission, so bring a couple of singles; confirm the open days first. Pair it with the square's shops, cafes, and after-dark ghost walks, which often fold the jail into the route.
