Entry No. 124 — the Denver file — filed under: castle
Cherokee Ranch & Castle
A genuine 15th-century-style Scottish stone castle rising from the Colorado prairie, Cherokee Ranch & Castle was home to the flamboyant cattlewoman-philanthropist Tweet Kimball for over 50 years and is now open to the public via guided tours through her extraordinary collection of world-class art, antiques, and rare books. The 3,400-acre working ranch setting — with sweeping views toward Pikes Peak — makes the whole experience feel improbably transporting.
The move: Book a Tuesday–Saturday guided castle tour ($21–24/person, reservations required), then linger on the grounds to take in the prairie-and-mountain panorama before driving the scenic Daniels Park Road back toward the highway — it doubles as a bison preserve with a free overlook pullout.
📍 Before you go The castle sits about 30 miles south of Denver, off Highway 85 past Sedalia — turn onto Daniels Park Road and watch for an easy-to-miss entrance marked by stone walls and a green iron gate, then climb the two-mile private driveway to the lot (the castle finally appears as you near the top). You can't just walk up: tours run by reservation only on select weekdays, so book ahead. Come on a clear day for the Pikes Peak panorama, and treat the route as part of the trip — Daniels Park Road threads a bison preserve with a free overlook pullout worth a stop. It's a working ranch, so stay on the marked drive.
