Devil's Backbone Keyhole

Devil's Backbone Open Space is a 2,198-acre Larimer County preserve where a jagged sandstone hogback juts from the prairie like a prehistoric fin. The Wild Loop Trail winds 2.5 miles to the Keyhole — a dramatic eroded window in the rock that frames Longs Peak on clear days.

The move: Arrive at dawn when the sandstone glows orange in the morning light, hike the Wild Loop Trail to the Keyhole, poke your heads through the rock frame for the classic Longs Peak photo, then spread a blanket in the prairie for breakfast while watching raptors hunt the grasslands below.
