Diebolt Brewing Company
A father-and-son team (Dan and Jack Diebolt) quietly brews French-style ales out of a former meat-packing warehouse on a side street in Sunnyside — biere de garde, saison, French amber, a tradition basically no other American brewery bothers with. Their barrel-aged imperial stout 'Vladislav' took Gold at the 2018 World Beer Cup and Gold again at the 2025 Great American Beer Festival, yet the taproom stays so low-key it's mostly just neighbors and beer obsessives. There's no flashy sign and no crowd; it reads like a garage with a tap list. Order the Biere de Triomphe (Cabernet-barrel biere de garde) and you're drinking something you can't get almost anywhere else in the country.
The move: Post up in the casual taproom or the patio, split a barrel-aged bottle and a saison flight, and let the bartender walk you through why French farmhouse ales taste like nothing else on the shelf.
