Underhill Museum
The Underhill Museum preserves the Victorian home and office of Dr. James Underhill — a mining engineer and U.S. Deputy Mineral Surveyor — exactly as it was when he and his wife Lucy lived there from 1912 to 1963, complete with his collection of rocks, minerals, historic photos, and a bank-style vault you can step inside. Run by the Idaho Springs Historical Society on a $2 suggested donation, it's one of the most genuinely quirky and personal small museums along I-70.
The move: Spend an hour wandering the preserved rooms of the Underhill house — peeking into the twin front doors (one for business, one for social calls), handling the mineral specimens, and ducking into the walk-in vault — then stroll the restored Victorian garden out back before grabbing a meal on Miner Street.
