Mesa Verde National Park Night Sky / Star Party
Mesa Verde is a certified International Dark Sky Park where, after the cliff dwellings close at night, the high mesa opens to some of the darkest skies in the region. Ranger-led night programs pair telescope viewing with Ancestral Puebloan sky lore and guest astronomers, while spots like Morefield Campground and the Far View area are open for naked-eye stargazing on your own. The combination of ancient cliff-dwelling country and a near-pristine night sky is the draw.
The move: Stay past dark at Morefield Campground or join a ranger night-sky program and stargaze over the same mesa where Ancestral Puebloans watched the heavens.
📍 Before you go About 35-40 miles west of Durango. Archaeological sites and trails close at night, so stargazing is limited to Morefield Campground, Far View and viewpoints; organized ranger star parties run on specific dates only, so check the NPS site (970-529-4465) before going.
