Entry No. 35 — the Durango file — filed under: soak
Orvis Hot Springs
Tucked at the base of the San Juan Mountains just south of Ridgway, Orvis Hot Springs is one of Colorado's most quietly beloved soaking destinations. Ten pools and ponds draw from naturally lithium-rich geothermal water that is never chemically treated or artificially heated — temperatures range from a cool 65°F to a punishing 114°F. The centerpiece is a 40-foot-wide outdoor pond with views straight up to the jagged San Juan peaks. Clothing is optional for adults throughout the outdoor areas, giving the place an unhurried, body-positive atmosphere that feels closer to a European thermal bath than anything else in the American West. Six spare lodge rooms and tent camping keep the crowd small and intentional.
The move: Pack towels and leave your phone in the car — photos are strictly prohibited. Share the Lobster Pot (108–114°F) for exactly as long as you can stand it, then cool off in the big outdoor pond while the peaks turn alpenglow pink at dusk.
📍 Before you go Day use runs 9 a.m.–9 p.m. (last entry 8 p.m.); admission is around $26–$30. No reservations needed for day soaking, but arrive early on weekends — capacity is capped. Clothing optional applies to adults 18+ in the outdoor areas; suits required indoors and for anyone under 18. Children under 4 are not permitted in the pools. No photography, no alcohol in the pools, no glass. Shower before entering. From Durango, allow about 75 minutes north via US-550 through the Million Dollar Highway.
