Telluride Free Box
“Labeled bins where ski gear, glassware, and the occasional wedding dress change hands for nothing.”
It started in 1975 as a box of clothes left outside a health-food store, and Telluride never let it die. When a 1983 paving crew hauled the shelves away, the resulting town-council meeting was one of the biggest in town history; when officials later eyed removal, a citizens' group called Friends of the Free Box took over the upkeep. Now the open-air shelving lives on South Willow across from the post office — labeled bins where ski gear, glassware, and the occasional wedding dress change hands for nothing.
The move: Each pull one Free Box find for the other to wear to dinner on Colorado Avenue, and leave something of your own on the shelf in trade.
📍 Before you go The Free Box moved in late 2024 from its longtime corner at Pine and Colorado to South Willow Street, directly across from the Telluride post office. Curbside parking there is loading-only, so leave the car in a town lot and walk — it's flat and a couple of blocks off the main drag. Drop-offs are limited to clean, working items (no furniture, electronics, or food), and cameras watch for dumping. Pair a browse with the free gondola up to Mountain Village or a stroll down Colorado Avenue.
