Entry No. 44 — the Durango file — filed under: cliff-dwellings
Ute Mountain Tribal Park
The only way into this 125,000-acre park is a phone call to the tribe — no walk-ups, no ticket windows, no crowds. Once you're cleared, a Ute guide takes you through canyon cliff dwellings that rival Mesa Verde in scale and are older than the country that now surrounds them, on trails where you might go hours without seeing another visitor. The entire place is sovereign land, and the tribe decides who enters and when.
The move: Call ahead to arrange a guided half-day or full-day canyon hike, then drive down together from Durango through Cortez for a morning departure with your private Ute guide.
📍 Before you go Access is strictly by prearranged appointment — call the tribe directly before planning any visit. Tours involve unpaved canyon roads; high-clearance or 4WD vehicle recommended for some routes. No drop-in entry at any gate.
