Colorado Model Railroad Museum
Housed in a former freight station in Greeley, the Colorado Model Railroad Museum centers on a 5,500-square-foot HO-scale layout depicting the Oregon, California and Eastern Railway set in 1975 — the last year cabooses ran as the final car on most trains. The layout incorporates Colorado mountain scenery, tunnels, trestles, and multiple trains running simultaneously under dispatcher rules operated by knowledgeable volunteers. Push a button to trigger a working forest-fire scene complete with smoke and a tiny fire crew. A mezzanine balcony lets you look down over the entire layout. Additional exhibits include a LEGO town with working train, a Thomas layout, and a real red caboose you can climb into.
The move: Walk the mezzanine balcony together and pick out details in the miniature towns below — the hidden vignettes reward slow looking. It is genuinely quiet and unhurried on weekday mornings, making it easy to talk. Grab lunch at one of Greeley's downtown spots a few blocks away afterward.
📍 Before you go Open Thursday–Saturday 10 AM–4 PM, Sunday noon–4 PM, Monday 10 AM–4 PM; closed Tuesday–Wednesday. Admission is $15 adults, $13 seniors (65+), $9 kids 12 and under, free under 3. Plan 1–2 hours. The museum is run largely by volunteers; trains follow real dispatcher protocols, so ask the volunteers questions — they love talking through the details. Parking is free on-site.
