Colorado National Monument - Saddlehorn Night Sky Program — After Dark & Night Sky in Grand Junction

Entry No. 82 — the Grand Junction file — filed under: after-dark

Colorado National Monument - Saddlehorn Night Sky Program

The Monument's red sandstone spires and canyons make a surreal foreground for ranger-led night-sky programs that gather in the parking lot beside the Saddlehorn Picnic Area near the visitor center. Rangers and volunteers run telescope viewing and talks about the stars and the value of dark skies; it's weather-permitting, so check current dates and times before you go. Set on the rim just above Fruita and a short drive from Grand Junction, it's dark enough to trade city glow for the Milky Way over towering canyon walls, and you can stay the night at the adjacent Saddlehorn Campground.

The move: Drive up Rim Rock Drive at dusk, join the ranger talk at Saddlehorn, and stay after dark to spot planets and deep-sky objects through the park's telescopes with canyon walls silhouetted around you.

📍 Before you go Night programs are seasonal (mainly summer) and scheduled; confirm dates with the visitor center (970-858-3617). Standard monument entrance fee applies and Rim Rock Drive is a slow, winding mountain road in the dark.
