Entry No. 88 — the Grand Junction file — filed under: after-dark
Colorado National Monument - Saddlehorn Night Sky Programs
The Monument is open 24 hours a day, so red-rock canyons and the 23-mile Rim Rock Drive become a private after-dark world once the day crowds leave. Rangers periodically host free evening astronomy programs at the Saddlehorn Picnic Area near the visitor center - telescopes, constellation talks, and Milky Way viewing once it's fully dark (weather permitting; check the NPS events calendar or call ahead for current dates). Even without a scheduled program, minimal light pollution makes the cliff-edge pull-offs along Rim Rock Drive excellent dark-sky viewpoints you can scout by day and return to under the stars.
The move: Scout a clifftop overlook on Rim Rock Drive in daylight, then return after dark for a ranger sky program near Saddlehorn and stay to watch the Milky Way rise over the canyon.
📍 Before you go Ranger evening sky programs run only late April through early October, two to three nights weekly; the park is 24/7 but the visitor center closes by late afternoon, so plan supplies and bring warm layers.
