Bleu Horses
Thirty-nine bright blue steel horses graze on a windswept 160-acre hilltop above Highway 287, visible for miles. Sculptor Jim Dolan of Belgrade spent 15 months and his own money building, hauling, and installing the herd in 2013 as a gift to the people of Montana. A short trail lets you walk right up among the life-size silhouettes, which seem to shift and watch each other against the open sky.
The move: Drive out at golden hour, hike up among the blue herd, and watch the light change across the Madison Valley.
