Entry No. 14 — the Miami file — filed under: strange monument

Bayfront Park — Challenger Memorial

Tucked into Isamu Noguchi's 1980s redesign of downtown's waterfront park, a 100-foot stainless-steel double helix spirals skyward as a memorial to the seven Challenger astronauts — a genuinely strange, almost sci-fi monument that most people walking to a Heat game or a bayfront boat tour never notice.

The move: Find the helix at dusk when it catches the last light, read the Michael McClure poem etched into the base plaque, then keep walking the Noguchi-landscaped park to the amphitheater and the Torch of Friendship.

Where: 301 Biscayne Blvd, Miami, FL 33132
