A 5-foot, 100-pound Latvian immigrant named Edward Leedskalnin spent 28 years (1923-1951) single-handedly carving and moving 1,100 tons of oolitic limestone into a private compound of thrones, a heart-shaped banquet table, and a telescope tower aimed at Polaris -- reportedly working only at night so no one ever witnessed how he shifted 30-ton blocks with no machinery. He started it, by his own account, the night after his 16-year-old fiancee 'Sweet Sixteen' jilted him at the altar in Latvia.

The move: Wander the carved throne room and the 9-ton revolving gate (a kid can nudge it open with one finger) at dusk, then sit at the heart-shaped 'Feast of Love' table and argue over how one heartbroken man actually moved those stones -- the mystery is still unsolved.
