Enriquita Mine

The Enriquita Mine was a prominent mercury (cinnabar) mine established in 1859 within the historic New Almaden mining district. It saw heavy production during the 19th century, helping supply quicksilver to the California Gold Rush. Today, the remediated site is part of Almaden Quicksilver County Park, where a piece of rusted, historic mining machinery remains along the Enriquita Trail.

The move: Hike the scenic Enriquita Trail to Providencia Pond, enjoying panoramic views of the Santa Cruz Mountains and Guadalupe Reservoir, and stop to photograph the rusted mining equipment left behind.

📍 Before you go The mine is located in Almaden Quicksilver County Park; while the hiking trails are open to the public, the actual mine workings are sealed, fenced off, and remediated due to safety and mercury contamination hazards.
