Ghost Ballet for East Bank Machineworks

A 100-foot-tall tangle of red-painted steel trusses spiraling off a deconstructed gantry crane, with a ground-level red 'turbine whirlwind' and neon fixtures that light up the center at night. It cost roughly $500,000 — Nashville's most expensive piece of public art when built in 2007-08 — and was designed by Alice Aycock to look like a different shape from every angle around downtown.

The move: Cross the John Seigenthaler pedestrian bridge after dark when the neon core is lit, circle the sculpture to watch it visually reassemble into different shapes, then keep walking into the honky-tonks.
