Whitney Plantation

Whitney is the only museum in Louisiana that focuses exclusively on the lives of the enslaved rather than the planter family. The grounds hold more than a dozen original 18th- and 19th-century structures plus stark memorials, including granite walls etched with the names of thousands of enslaved people and a haunting field of ceramic-headed child sculptures. It is sobering rather than weird, but unlike any other plantation site in the state.

The move: Take the full guided tour together, then sit quietly at the Field of Angels memorial to the enslaved children who died here.
