Entry No. 12 — the Phoenix file — filed under: artist colony
Cattle Track Arts Compound
An 11-acre hidden artist colony founded in 1937 from a redwood house built out of salvaged water-pipeline materials, where 20-30 working artists still keep studios among palo verdes and scattered sculpture — including a player piano decorated by three generations of resident painters and a 1972 Ford LTD still parked where its owner, painter Philip Curtis, left it.
The move: Catch one of the seasonal open-studio days or the rotating Cattle Track exhibition at Scottsdale Arts, then walk the sculpture-dotted grounds and peek into working adobe studios two miles from Old Town.
