Pittsburgh Swing Dance Community at Wilkins School Community Center
Wilkins School opened in 1927 as part of the Swissvale district, closed in 1977, and got a second life as a nonprofit community center in 1981 — which is how a Lindy Hop scene ends up in a room with schoolhouse proportions and a wood floor. The Pittsburgh Swing Dance Community runs it every Wednesday: a one-hour progressive lesson from 7 to 8, then social dancing from 8 to 10. Lesson series restart the first Wednesday of every month, so showing up on week one means you're not walking into a class that already learned the swingout three weeks ago. Most weeks a DJ pulls from across the decades; the group aims for a live band roughly once a month. The house rule is explicit and load-bearing: no partner, no experience.

The story
Wilkins Elementary opened in 1927 under the Swissvale School District and taught for fifty years before closing in 1977. Rather than lose the building, neighbors organized, and in 1981 the Wilkins School Community Center was granted 501(c)(3) status. It ran on volunteers for three decades; the first staff member wasn't hired until 2010. Perkins Eastman Architects donated a full building analysis in 2019, and in 2024 the Borough of Swissvale put ARPA money in. What all that preserved is a schoolhouse still shaped like a schoolhouse: an auditorium with a stage, seating and string lighting; a gallery with tall windows and wood floors; a classroom with a whiteboard and a piano.
The tenant list reads like a directory of things that need a room and can't afford a storefront. Mosaic Dance Pittsburgh runs belly dance here; Pittsburgh Contact Improvisation meets here; Polina's Ballerinas, founded March 2024, teaches ballet. Elsewhere on the schedule: West Coast swing, Scandinavian dance, heritage crafts, creative writing, lawn bowling. The rooms rent cheaply and that is the entire business model.
The Pittsburgh Swing Dance Community has the Wednesday slot. Lindy Hop 1 runs 7 to 8pm as a four-week progressive series that restarts the first week of every month, working through partner connection, eight-count rhythms and the swingout; Lindy Hop 2 is four modules — Building Up Basics, 6-Count & Other Rhythms, Spins & Turns, and Lindy Hop & Partnered Charleston — takeable in any order, all four required before Level 3. Fifth Wednesdays get special-topic lessons, with occasional intros to Balboa, Blues, Solo and Collegiate Shag. Social dancing follows from 8 to 10, DJed across everything from the 1920s to the present, with the stated aim of a live band roughly once a month.
What it's like
Enter from Charleston Avenue or the wheelchair-accessible entrance at the rear, and arrive around 6:50 if you're taking the lesson — a four-week series that started last week is not the week to walk in cold. The room is a converted school space, not a ballroom: wood floor, hard surfaces, a stage at one end. The published rule is blunt and it holds — no partner or dance experience needed for the social dance or for Lindy Hop 1 — which means the 7pm hour is taught to the whole room and newcomers are absorbed rather than paired off. At 8 the lesson dissolves into social dancing and the floor mixes levels freely. Asking strangers to dance is expected; so is a cheerful no. Everyone present is under PSDC's Safer Spaces policy, covering consent and floor safety, and it gets enforced.
The move: Go on the first Wednesday of a month, get there by 6:50 so you're in the room when the beginner series starts fresh, take the 7pm hour, then stay for the 8-to-10 social and rotate partners instead of clinging to each other. Walk it off afterward on Braddock Avenue in Regent Square — the business district is a five-minute drive and still awake.

How do I get there, and where do I park?
7604 Charleston Ave in Swissvale, on the Regent Square edge — about fifteen minutes east of downtown by car. It's a residential block, so it's street parking; give yourself a couple of minutes to find a spot rather than arriving at 6:59.
Do I need a partner, or any experience?
No. PSDC states it outright: no partner or dance experience is needed for the social dances or the Lindy Hop 1 series. Other series and workshops can carry prerequisites, so read the event description before registering for anything past level one.
What does it cost?
PSDC doesn't publish a flat door price on its site — lesson series are registered through the Register for Lessons link on the calendar page. Bring both cash and a card so neither answer strands you.
Which Wednesday should a first-timer pick?
The first one of the month. That's when Lindy Hop 1 restarts its four-week progression from the beginning. Fifth Wednesdays are one-off special-topic lessons, which are fun but assume you already dance.
Is the building accessible?
