Laurelthirst Public House
Open since 1988 and still independently run, the Laurelthirst books two sets most days — an early happy-hour slot around 6pm and a late one around 9pm — in a narrow wood-panelled room where the band is essentially standing in the aisle. Nearly everything is free; when there is a cover it tends to be a $10 suggestion, and it's cash, which is the venue's one non-negotiable. The booking runs to country, string bands, roots and the loose Portland Americana scene, with residencies that have outlasted several waves of the city's nightlife. The kitchen is a genuine kitchen rather than an afterthought — Cascade Farms beef burgers, a sunflower-seed-and-walnut vegan patty, banh mi, rice bowls, mostly $9 to $15, with a 3% discount for paying cash. The story
The Laurelthirst has been open on NE Glisan in Kerns since 1988 and bills itself as the oldest independent music venue in Portland, a claim that survives mostly because the place never tried to become anything else. Live music runs every single day in two blocks — 6pm to 8pm, then 9pm to late — and the booking sits in Americana, folk, country-rock and blues, with residencies that have outlived several complete turnovers of the city's nightlife. Shows are free unless the calendar says otherwise; when there is a cover it's typically a $10 suggestion, and covers are cash only.
The room is narrow and wood-panelled, and the band plays on the floor rather than above it, which is why fifteen minutes early is the difference between a chair and the back wall. Off to one side is a poolroom with a TV carrying the live music, for people who want the band without standing in it. Cribbage boards are part of the furniture, and the league behind them is more serious than that sounds: divisions, five games a match, $5 dues per match paid out to the top four finishers, points for wins and skunks and double skunks, and muggins expressly banned. There's also a softball team, playing city fields at Lents, Farragut, University and Bloomington.
The kitchen is a real kitchen. Burgers use Cascade Farms beef; the vegan option is a sunflower-seed-and-walnut patty that also turns up in the rice bowls; there's a banh mi, a Hatch chile verde with pulled pork or chicken, a chili dog under bean chili and sloppy joe mix, samosas, quesadillas and a hummus plate. Produce is local and organic where they can get it. Every price on the menu is listed twice — cash first, card second — because paying cash takes 3% off.
What it's like
Doors are 4pm on weekdays and noon on weekends, and the useful move is walking in around 5:45 for the 6pm set, when there are still tables. Nothing is ticketed in advance and nothing is announced far ahead — the calendar changes daily, so check it the morning of. The band loads in through the room you're sitting in. Between 8 and 9 there's a gap you can use to order food or start a cribbage hand. Bring cash: the kitchen takes cards, the cover does not, and a $10 suggestion at the door is not a negotiation you want to open with a phone. It's 21+ except noon to 3pm on weekends, the one window where the room is all-ages.
The move: Show up at 5:45 on a weeknight, get a table before the 6pm happy-hour set fills the room, split a burger and the fries with green goddess, and bring $20 cash each in case the late band asks for a suggested cover. If you want it in daylight instead, come Saturday at noon when doors open all-ages and catch the 1pm matinee — free, sober, and over by 3.

Do I need a ticket?
No — there's no advance ticketing at all. Most nights are free; when a show carries a cover it's usually a $10 suggestion collected at the door in cash. The kitchen takes cards, the door doesn't.
What time does the music actually start?
Every day, two sets: 6pm to 8pm and 9pm to late. Note the closing times — Mon 4pm–10pm, Tue–Wed 4pm–midnight, Thu to 12:30am, Fri to 1am, Sat–Sun noon–1am — so Monday effectively gives you the early set only.
Can we bring kids?
Only between noon and 3pm on Saturday and Sunday, which is the only all-ages window. Every other hour is 21+.
Is there anything to eat if I don't eat meat?
Yes. The sunflower-seed-and-walnut patty works as a burger or in either rice bowl, and there's a veggie burger, hummus plate, samosas, quesadillas and salads. The menu carries a peanut allergen warning, so flag allergies when you order.
How do I get into the cribbage league?
Email [email protected] to be added to the next league — they run in numbered seasons and the current one closes to new players. Dues are $5 a match, five games per match, and muggins is not allowed. Boards are out in the pub the rest of the time.
