Rice Northwest Museum of Rocks and Minerals

A private rockhound's collection that outgrew its owners and became a nonprofit museum, housed in a 1952 ranch-style house on the National Register of Historic Places, built around one of the world's finest collections of crystals and anchored by a prized rhodochrosite specimen (the 'Alma Rose') the museum treats as its crown jewel.

The move: Spend an hour working case by case through the fluorescent-mineral and meteorite rooms in the old ranch house, then walk the 22-acre grounds outside — about 25 minutes from downtown, so pair it with lunch in Hillsboro on the way back.
