Wonderwood
Mike Bennett moved to Portland from Pennsylvania in 2016 and has spent the years since covering the city in cartoon plywood animals; in St. Johns he built a 7,000-square-foot indoor mini golf course inside one of those worlds, then put an all-day cafe in the building next door. The current run is called the Alpha-Bestiary — a new storyline with 26 new monsters, hand-painted and standing at putter height around nine holes. Admission is $12 a head and explicitly unlimited plays, so a bad first round is a scoring decision rather than a fixed outcome. The cafe at 8811 N Lombard opened in the old See See Motor Coffee space in late 2022 and now runs breakfast through dinner plus soft serve, with free trivia on Fridays and bingo on Tuesdays. Willamette Week readers have voted it Portland's best golf course two years running, which is either a joke at the expense of Pumpkin Ridge or a fair result.

The story
Mike Bennett moved to Portland from Pennsylvania in 2016 and describes himself as a cartoonist and “public joy creator” — a former preschool teacher whose animal-character “Slow Down” yard signs spread across the city before any of this had an address. On October 15, 2022 he opened two rooms a block apart in St. Johns: a cafe at 8811 N Lombard St, in the 1,800-square-foot space See See Motor Coffee had vacated, and a walk-through exhibit next door at 7410 N Chicago Ave. The first show, The Scourge of Castle Maplehold, ran on an $8 suggested donation and was populated by hand-painted plywood figures including a rat king and a tree wizard.
The exhibit building has since become a nine-hole indoor mini golf course spanning 7,000 square feet, and the storyline rotates with it. The current run is the Alpha-Bestiary: a new plot and 26 new monsters, hand-painted and standing at putter height. Admission is $12 a person, free for kids three and under, and explicitly unlimited plays, with discounts on four- and ten-pass bundles. Wonderwood advertises that Willamette Week readers voted it Portland’s best golf course two years running, a result that says more about how Portlanders vote than about the greens at Pumpkin Ridge.
The cafe carries the rest: breakfast through dinner, coffee, soft serve, board games, vegan options, and a free weekly calendar that reads like a village fair. Bard Bingo runs Tuesdays 6–8pm, Gerard “The Bard” Bardler calling four rounds at $5 a card, cash only, all winnings paid back out as prizes. Untapped Trivia takes Fridays 6–8. Saturdays at 11 the Bard reads from books donated by the neighbors at Twin Rivers Books; Sundays at 10 it’s a kids’ concert with Mr. Ben.
What it's like
You are managing two doors: golf at 7410 N Chicago, food at 8811 N Lombard, one phone number between them. There are no reservations for general admission — you take a putter, get a waitlist spot if it’s busy, and the site posts a live wait time worth checking before you drive out. Inside, the course is a lit, loud, low-ceilinged fantasy diorama where the monsters are both scenery and hazard, and the placards do the plot. Nine holes runs about half an hour, but the $12 is unlimited, so most groups loop — the second lap is where people slow down and actually read the thing. Last tee is 8pm sharp. Weekend mornings are dense with strollers; Friday and Tuesday evenings are the grown-up version.
The move: Go on a Friday: eat at the cafe at 8811 N Lombard around 5:30, stay for free Untapped Trivia at 6 (get there early, the seats fill), then walk next door and tee off before the last tee time at 8. Play the nine, then play it again on the same $12 — the replay is where you find out which of you actually reads the monsters and which one just hits it hard.
