The story
A botánica is a religious goods store — the name means plant shop, from when the trade was mostly medicinal herbs — and it serves practitioners of Santería, Espiritismo, Palo Monte, Santa Muerte devotion and folk Catholicism at the same counter. Botanica San Lazaro is a working one on lower Broad Street, listed by the Rhode Island Hispanic Chamber of Commerce at 726 Broad Street, 02907, after years at No. 794. It is not alone: the same directory carries Botanica Anaisa on Cranston Street, Botanica Orula on Atwells Avenue, and Botanica El Angel Miguel on Elwood Avenue — a network in a city whose East Side, a mile off, has never had reason to notice it.
The name is not decoration. San Lázaro is the beggar of Luke 16, covered in sores while dogs licked them at the rich man's gate, and the patron of lepers the twelfth-century Order of Saint Lazarus was founded to serve. In Santería he is syncretized with Babalú-Ayé, the orisha of disease and its cure, honored publicly on 17 December. The plaster figures on crutches with dogs at their heels are that man, and people buy them because they intend to keep them.

What it's like
Broad Street south of downtown, street parking out front, roughly 9 to 7 on weekdays and 9 to 6 Saturday, closed Sunday. Inside is bright and dense rather than atmospheric — shelved wall to wall with glass candles, statuary, bottled oils and packaged herbs, priced and stocked for people who came in with a specific errand. Spanish is the working language of the counter and English is fine. This is a functioning religious supply store, not an exhibit: ask before you photograph anything, don't handle the saints, and don't ask anyone to perform. Ask what a candle color means or who a statue is and you will get a straight, patient answer, which is the actual experience on offer.
The move: Go on a weekday before 7 p.m., pick out a seven-day candle for each other and ask the counterman what your choices actually mean, then work up Broad Street past the other botanicas and stay in the neighborhood for Dominican food.

What number should I call?
Listings disagree, which is worth knowing before a special trip. The Hispanic Chamber directory gives (401) 572-1271; other directories still carry 401-467-0005. Try the chamber number first, and call ahead if you are coming from any distance.
Do I need to practice something to shop there?
No. It is a retail store and browsing is normal. Buying a seven-day candle and asking the counterman what the color is for is an ordinary transaction, and getting a real answer is most of the point of going.
Is there a time of year that is different?
17 December, the feast of San Lázaro — Babalú-Ayé in Santería — which is the shop's namesake day and the one date that reliably drives demand for candles and offerings. Go in the run-up if you want to see the place doing what it is for; go another week if you want the counterman's time.
