Entry No. 1 — the Providence file — filed under: soak
Float RI
A strip-mall storefront on Post Road hiding two sensory-deprivation pods, each holding ten inches of water saturated with 850-plus pounds of Epsom salt and heated to skin temperature (94.5°F), so you hang in the dark hearing nothing but your own pulse. Sessions run from an hour up to a full four, if you want to find out who you are at hour three. The fringe-science annex is real: a HaloIR suite stacking salt-aerosol halotherapy with infrared sauna and red light, a BioCharger NG that bathes you in pulsed electromagnetic fields and light from a menu of 1,500-plus "recipes," and a water-filled vibroacoustic bed that plays low frequencies through your skeleton. Everything is appointment-only through their Helm booking system, and they take FSA and HSA cards, which makes the Tesla-coil session technically a healthcare expense.

The story
Float RI runs out of a storefront at 2258 Post Road in Warwick, and nothing about the strip-mall exterior prepares you for the physics inside. Two clamshell pods, each about five feet wide and eight and a half feet long, hold water dosed with 850 pounds of medical-grade Epsom salt and warmed to roughly 94.5 degrees — skin temperature, the point at which water stops registering as water. Within minutes of the hatch closing, light, sound, gravity, and temperature all go quiet enough that your own pulse becomes the loudest thing in the room. Each pod gets its own private room and shower, and between floats the solution cycles through a three-part filtration and sterilization system using UV light and hydrogen peroxide — the brine is too salty for microorganisms to survive anyway, but the house runs it through the works regardless.
The pods are only half the menu. The HaloIR suite stacks halotherapy — salt ground to breathable aerosol — with an infrared sauna and red light in a single sitting. The BioCharger NG offers more than 1,500 programmed "recipes" of pulsed electromagnetic fields and light; whatever you conclude about the science, you will have spent an afternoon being hummed at by a Tesla-coil descendant, which is not nothing. A vibroacoustic therapy bed plays low frequencies through water directly into your skeleton — the house calls it "massage from the inside out" — and conventional massage rooms exist for the unconvinced.
Everything is appointment-only through the Helm booking system; standard floats run 60 or 90 minutes with longer sessions available on request, and the operation takes FSA and HSA cards, which makes the electromagnetic light bath, administratively speaking, healthcare.
What it's like
Walk-ins aren't a thing — you book, and on a first visit arrive fifteen minutes early for paperwork and a walkthrough. Your room is private: shower, put in the provided earplugs, climb into the pod, and control the light, the music, and whether the hatch stays open. Most first-timers take 60 minutes; the opening stretch goes to fidgeting, and somewhere after that time gets slippery. When it's over you shower again — the salt insists — with towels, shampoo, and blow dryers provided. Nobody rushes you out afterward; the lobby operates at the speed of people who have just been horizontal in the dark for an hour. Don't book within two weeks of hair dye or 48 hours of a spray tan: the water will collect your color as rent, and they'll turn you away.
The move: Book both pod rooms for simultaneous 60-minute floats — the pods are strictly single-occupancy, so side-by-side rooms is the couples move — with code FIRSTFLOAT for $15 off each first float, then compare notes over the house herbal tea in the relaxation room. Feeling ambitious, the couples Sauna & Float combo is $200 for both of you.

Pair it with
- Urban Sweat at Raffa Yoga — Fifteen minutes north in Cranston, its six-room sweat circuit is the maximalist answer to the pod's minimalism — do both in one day and cover the entire temperature spectrum.
- Rocky Point State Park amusement ruins — Ten minutes east in Warwick, the bayfront amusement ruins make the right re-entry walk after an hour of sensory deprivation — open air, salt wind, and no stimulation you didn't choose.
- Angkor Wat Replica at Wat Dhamagosnaram — A hand-carved marble Angkor Wat with a goldfish moat sits in a Cranston temple yard twenty minutes away, and a post-float nervous system is the ideal state in which to circle it.

Good to know
How much does it cost, and are there deals?
Book through floatri.floathelm.com; the code FIRSTFLOAT takes $15 off a first float, and the couples Sauna & Float combo runs $200 for two. They accept FSA and HSA cards, so a flexible-spending balance can legitimately fund a sensory-deprivation habit.
I can't swim — is that a problem?
No. The pod holds about ten inches of water carrying 850 pounds of Epsom salt; floating is involuntary. People fall asleep in there on purpose.
When are they open?
Closed Tuesdays; Monday and Wednesday 11am–6pm, Thursday through Sunday 8am–8pm. Everything is by appointment — book online or call 401-921-5100 — and cancel more than 24 hours out or you get account credit rather than a refund.
How clean is shared salt water, really?
Everyone showers before entering, and between sessions the solution runs through a three-part filtration and sterilization system using UV light and hydrogen peroxide. The salinity itself is hostile to microorganisms — the filtration is belt-and-suspenders.
Can anyone float?
Age 13 and up, with a parent present for minors. Sit it out with open wounds, active skin or respiratory infections, or epilepsy; pregnant floaters are steered toward the second trimester with a physician's sign-off first.
