Charna Ethier has been composing all-botanical perfumes under this label since 2009, and she's still shipping new work — perfume blog CaFleureBon reviewed her Hawaiian-flora release Melia Lei in June 2026. The studio sits on the third floor of the mill building at 80 Fountain Street in Pawtucket, exterior doors locked, everything by appointment. The draw is the custom perfume bar: a working lesson in fragrance structure, then you blend drop by drop from her stock of rare botanical essences, writing down your formula as you go so the scent can be remade later. She also teaches full natural-perfumery classes in the autumn and spring, covering tincturing, fixation, sillage, and aging.

The story
Charna Ethier grew up in rural New England with parents she has described as devout hippies, which in practice meant a childhood inventory of maple sap and lilac rather than department-store bottles. She spent years inside large beauty and fragrance companies before leaving to make the thing they would not: perfume with no synthetics in it at all — plants, flowers, fruits and woods, extracted and blended into pure alcohol. Providence Perfume Co. has been hers since 2009.
It worked. She took Best of Scent awards in 2010 and 2012, was named natural perfumer of the year in 2012, has had FiFi nominations, and has been written up in Vogue, W and the Los Angeles Times. The work has not stopped: CaFleureBon reviewed Melia Lei in 2026, an eau de parfum built entirely from Hawaiian botanicals, frangipani carrying it with ylang-ylang, jasmine, pink pepper and coconut underneath.
The studio is Suite 203 at 80 Fountain Street in Pawtucket, an artist mill a minute off I-95; look for the gray door marked "80" where Fountain meets Blackstone Avenue. Ethier runs the business with her family and is usually in Tuesdays and Fridays. Two things happen there for outsiders. The perfume bar is a lesson followed by a build: you blend drop by drop from her stock of rare botanical essences and write the formula down as you go, so the scent survives as a recipe and not just a bottle. What it's like
Nothing here is a walk-in. The mill's exterior doors are locked, so you call 401-455-2325 from the sidewalk or use the call box and get buzzed up. Come unscented — no perfume, no scented lotion, ideally not the fragranced laundry detergent either, because your nose is the instrument and you are sharing a small room. Budget an hour minimum per person, about an hour and a half for two. The lesson comes first, then the essences come out and you work on paper strips before anything goes near a bottle. Four is the cap at the bar; larger groups, up to twelve, are booked as private events. You leave with a 10ml bottle at $140 or a 30ml at $200 plus tax, and your formula on file — refills later run $75 to $120.
