The story
There has been a screen in this field on the Louisquisset Pike since 1942, when it opened as the Westacres Auto Theatre. It was renamed the Rustic Drive-In in 1951 — one screen, room for 600 cars — and the current management counts its seasons from July 3, 1951, which made April 10, 2026 the opening night of the 75th. Affiliated Theatres and the Boston Culinary Group both turn up in its operator history; CBB Enterprise has run it since 2007, and it is programmed under the Your Neighborhood Theatres banner out of Boston.
The name changed in 1988, when two more screens went up and the Rustic became the Rustic Tri-View. Capacity settled at 550 cars. Film gave way to digital projection on July 6, 2013, which is the change that kept a lot of drive-ins alive and killed the ones that couldn't pay for it. The Rustic paid, and it is now the last drive-in still operating in Rhode Island — three screens on a strip of Route 146 halfway between Providence and Woonsocket, a snack bar whose long-advertised specialty is clam cakes, a soft-serve window, and a dog-walking lane between screens 2 and 3.

What it's like
Gates open around 6:30 and nothing starts until the sky cooperates — an early-August showtime ran 8:25 p.m. You pay at the box office by the carload, $33 standard, $10 more for an SUV or oversized vehicle, $28 on Wednesday's customer appreciation night, and you pick your screen on the way in, which is the only real decision of the evening. Then it's the usual choreography: find a spot before the middle rows fill, back in, drop the hatch, tune the car stereo, and kill every light in the vehicle including the dome lamp. Snack bar and restrooms are mid-field. Leashed, well-behaved dogs are welcome outside — there's a walking area between screens 2 and 3 — but not in the snack bar or the restrooms. The second feature ends very late; plan the drive home accordingly.
The move: Check the week's lineup, pick the screen whose second feature you actually want, and get through the gate near 6:30 to claim a middle-row spot — then back the car in, open the hatch, and make the snack bar dinner.
