The Country Doctor Museum — Oddities & Curiosities in Raleigh

Entry No. 4 — the Raleigh file — filed under: history

The Country Doctor Museum

The oldest museum in the United States dedicated to rural healthcare features over 5,000 vintage medical artifacts spread across two restored 19th-century country doctor offices. Exhibits showcase 1950s iron lungs, bloodsucking leech jars, coffin-shaped pill tablets, and crude Civil War-era surgical kits.

The move: Take a guided docent tour through the 1850s examination rooms to marvel at antique apothecary jars and surgical tools, then wander through the medicinal herb garden modeled after a 16th-century Italian garden.
