Mount Hope Cemetery — Kate Morgan's grave
San Diego's oldest municipal cemetery, founded in 1869, holds the actual, unmarketed grave (Division 5, Section 1) of Kate Morgan — the "Beautiful Stranger" who checked into the Hotel del Coronado under a false name in 1892 and was found dead five days later on the beach staircase, a death the hotel turned into its famous ghost legend while her plain headstone sits here, nearly forgotten, two bridges away.
The move: Track down Kate Morgan's plot in Division 5, Section 1, then drive to the Hotel del Coronado to compare the real grave to the polished ghost-tour version of her story.
