Stonewall Mine

Located in Cuyamaca Rancho State Park, the Stonewall Mine was San Diego County's most productive gold mine, yielding over $2 million in gold between 1870 and 1892. Today, the site features the sealed, concrete-lined main shaft, a vintage mine cage, and rusted ore carts, all preserved as an outdoor historical exhibit. Visitors can also explore the surrounding pine-oak woodlands where the mining town of Cuyamaca City once stood.

The move: Take a scenic hike along the Minshall Trail to the mine site, where you can photograph the historic mining relics and enjoy a picnic at the nearby tables overlooking Lake Cuyamaca.

📍 Before you go The mine shaft and historic machinery are fenced off for safety, but visitors can legally view them from the surrounding public trail within Cuyamaca Rancho State Park.
