Entry No. 11 — the San Francisco file — filed under: mummies
Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum
Housed in a temple modeled on Karnak in San Jose's Rosicrucian Park, this is the largest collection of Egyptian antiquities on display in the western United States — a full-scale reconstructed rock-cut tomb you walk through, a mummified nobleman nicknamed 'Usermontu,' and a 'baboon mummy' that turned out to contain no baboon at all, just a ceramic jar.
The move: Do the self-guided walk-through tomb together in the dim underground gallery, then picnic in the surrounding Rosicrucian Park rose garden or catch a show at the attached planetarium.
