Big Caliente Hot Springs

Deep in the Santa Ynez backcountry, 115°F water pours out of a bluff into a primitive rock-and-concrete pool with diversion valves locals use to dial the temperature down — the Independent calls it a "more-than-welcome relaxation point" after miles of dusty fire road, with a smaller, muddier sibling (Little Caliente) 4.8 miles further north.

The move: Drive as far up Romero-Camuesa Road as conditions allow, hike in past P-Bar Flat and Middle Santa Ynez campgrounds, soak while working the temperature valves yourselves, and time it for late afternoon so you're not hiking out in the dark.
