Fremont Peak Observatory

A 30-inch Challenger reflector telescope — built and hauled up the mountain by volunteers — sits inside a dome on a 3,173-foot summit in Fremont Peak State Park, run under contract with California State Parks by an all-volunteer astronomy nonprofit that's kept it going for nearly 40 years.

The move: Drive the 11-mile switchback up San Juan Canyon Road for a free Saturday-evening program: a volunteer astronomer's talk keyed to the season (galaxies in spring, the Milky Way's core in summer), then queue at the eyepiece for views of Saturn's rings or a globular cluster once the sky goes fully black — pack a jacket, it's a mountaintop.
