Entry No. 19 — the Seattle file — filed under: roadside-oddity
The Fremont Troll
An 18-foot concrete troll crouches in the gloom under the north end of the Aurora Bridge, one giant hand crushing a real Volkswagen Beetle into the dirt. Four artists built it in 1990 from rebar, wire, and concrete after winning a competition to reclaim the trash-strewn underpass. One eye is a polished hubcap, and kids routinely scramble up its arm and into the car. The stairway up to the sculpture was rebuilt in 2023.
The move: Climb up the troll's arm together after dark when the underpass is empty and take turns posing in the crushed VW.
