Greenwood Cemetery & the 1,000 Steps

An 1888 hilltop garden cemetery (now Greenwood Memorial Terrace) whose most storied feature is a crumbling terraced staircase locals call the 1,000 Steps. Built around 1898, the stairs stem from a real deal between the cemetery and the Elks that fizzled when members' wives balked at being buried separately from their husbands, leaving the terraces and fraternal mausoleum to decay. A Great Northern railroad tunnel was driven beneath the grounds in 1910, feeding the legend that ghosts guard the climb and try to stop you from reaching the top. There are really only about 60 steps. Open daily, dawn to dusk.

The move: Bring a flashlight and walk the overgrown 1,000 Steps at dusk, then read the oldest headstones up on the terraced landings.

📍 Before you go It is an active cemetery; visit during daylight/posted hours, stay respectful, and the stairs are steep and uneven.
