LOTUS Shrine, Yogaville

A gold-leafed, lotus-flower-shaped shrine rises over the James River with twelve separate altars — one each for Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Shinto, Taoism, Buddhism, Islam, Sikhism, Native American, African and other traditions — with blue neon tubing tracing the ribs of the vaulted ceiling above them. Swami Satchidananda (who opened the 1969 Woodstock festival) had it built for $2 million, dedicated in 1986, as a physical argument that every faith worships the same light.

The move: Time a visit around Yogaville's open program hours, walk the riverside grounds and step inside all twelve altars in one slow loop, then stay for a community meal if one's scheduled that day.
