Titanic Memorial

A 12-foot nude granite figure stands with arms flung open in a crucifix pose, eyes closed, robe draped low, honoring the men who gave up lifeboat seats on the Titanic so 'women and children might be saved.' Funded entirely by women in 1912-31 with donations capped at $1 each, it was bumped from its original spot by the Kennedy Center in 1966, sat in storage two years, and now stands almost totally overlooked on a quiet waterfront path.

The move: Walk the Washington Channel promenade at dusk, find the statue tucked past the marinas, and read the men-only dedication plaque out loud before grabbing a table at one of the Wharf's seafood spots nearby.
