Entry No. 41 — the Wichita file — filed under: underground
Ellinwood Underground Tunnels & Wolf Hotel Speakeasy
Beneath the sidewalks of a tiny Kansas wheat-belt town (~2,000 people), an entire 19th-century business district is still down there — a barber shop, a bathhouse, and an 1887 harness shop frozen exactly as left, reached by descending stairs cut through the pavement. German settlers built these sub-street storefronts to survive the prairie wind and heat, creating the only surviving walkable tunnel system of its kind in Kansas (every other city's network was demolished). The Wolf Hotel's Prohibition-era underground saloon has been fully reopened and is getting more use than ever, with themed Friday/Saturday Roaring Twenties nights where a nightly password gets you in. Atlas Obscura, Roadside America, and the Kansas Sampler Foundation's "8 Wonders of Kansas" have all flagged this place — and yet most people driving U.S. 56 blow right past it without looking down.
The move: Book a daytime tunnel tour (Mon/Thu/Fri/Sat at 11am or 1pm, $15/person) to walk the original storefronts, then come back Friday or Saturday evening — show up at the Wolf Hotel, get the night's password, and descend into the underground saloon for a signature drink.
📍 Before you go Ellinwood sits about two hours northwest of Wichita off U.S. 56, near Great Bend, so this is a full day-trip rather than a quick drink. The tunnel tours run by reservation only and check in inside the Ellinwood Emporium at 1 N. Main Street, in the small downtown grid where curbside parking is easy and free; note there are typically no tours mid-week. The underground saloon sits beneath the Historic Wolf Hotel a few doors away, reached through an unassuming back door. Do the daytime tour first, then linger for the evening and pair it with the town's restored brick storefronts. It's a tiny residential prairie town, so tread respectfully.
