Entry No. 34 — the Anchorage file — filed under: hands-on
Eagle River Forge
A working artisan blacksmithing and fabrication shop in Eagle River, just north of downtown Anchorage, that runs an occasional by-appointment beginner session called "Hammering Around." After a basic fire-safety briefing you get hands on the forges, power hammer, and grinders to draw out hot steel into a small knife or bangle you keep. The shop frames it as a way to find out whether working with fire is your thing or just a bucket-list itch, and they'll lend gloves, safety glasses, and ear protection if you don't bring your own. Sessions are by appointment, so reach out ahead to book.
The move: Take turns at the anvil hammering glowing steel into a small knife or a forged bangle to take home.
