Fleetwood's Rock-n-Roll Wedding Chapel
The motto is Shop–Drink–Get Married, and all three are literal: one Haywood Road storefront holds a vintage shop, a full cocktail bar, and what Fleetwood's bills as the area's only Vegas-style wedding chapel. When no one is getting hitched, the stage hosts touring garage and punk bands, karaoke, and DJ nights, and every Sunday from 11 to 5 the lot fills with Junk-O-Rama, West Asheville's original vintage-and-antique flea market. The weddings are real, cheap by Asheville standards, and bookable by phone; there is also a package called 'Married for the Weekend!' for the less legally inclined. The story
Mary Kelley opened Fleetwood's in August 2017 with partners Christi and Simon Whiteley, in a Haywood Road storefront that had been Daggit's Pawn Shop, on the theory that Asheville needed an affordable wedding venue with actual character. The pitch has never softened: Shop – Drink – Get Married, billed as the area's only Vegas-style wedding chapel, with packages running from a five-minute quickie ceremony to a fully seated affair with reception.
One storefront holds all three verbs. There is a curated vintage boutique, a full cocktail bar, and the chapel itself — an intimate room kitted out in playful vintage decor with a nod to all things rock-n-roll, where the founders promise vows, rings and a little smudged lipstick. When nobody is getting married, the chapel is the stage: local and touring bands, stand-up comedy, karaoke, DJ nights, punk-rock flea markets and cult-movie screenings have all run in the same room, and Explore Asheville lists it as an all-ages venue.
Then there is the escape hatch for the commitment-averse. Married for the Weekend is a $75 'Fake as Hell' ceremony — no marriage license, appointment only — and you may marry your partner, your dog, your best friend or your cell phone. It buys flashing wedding rings, a walk down the aisle to the house wedding march, a quick ceremony and an official Fleetwood's Fake as Hell certificate, with T-shirts, stickers and Polaroids sold as add-ons. The chapel also rents out for birthdays, fundraisers, art shows, movie screenings, comedy and seances. Every Sunday from 11 to 5, the Junk-O-Rama vintage and antique flea market — the self-described OG of West Asheville — takes over.
What it's like
Sunday is the day to test the whole machine. Junk-O-Rama runs 11 to 5, the bar opens at noon, and you can work the flea market tables and the in-house vintage racks with a drink in hand, which is the entire design. The room reads as a bar that happens to contain a chapel: vintage decor, rock-n-roll iconography, a stage where altar logic would put the altar. Evenings shift to bands, karaoke or DJ nights, and the crowd skews local and unfussy. Weddings, real or fake, are appointments — do not turn up expecting to be married on the spot, and if you booked one, other people will be drinking thirty feet away while you say your vows. The move: Go Sunday: dig through Junk-O-Rama's tables from the early afternoon, hold your finds over cocktails at the bar, and stay for whatever band loads in that night — the chapel is thirty feet away if the evening gets ideas.
