The Odd
The room that used to be the Odditorium reopened under new owners with a shorter name and the same conviction that a bar should double as a museum of the macabre. It is part dive, part oddities collection, part stage: Explore Asheville calls it home to the city's punk, hardcore, alternative, and metal scene, and the calendar rounds that out with drag, burlesque, freak shows, comedy, karaoke, trivia, flea markets, and the occasional male go-go night. It is LGBTQ-owned, a Mountain BizWorks graduate, and took a Mountain Xpress Best of WNC nod in 2023. The taxidermy watches you order; it has seen worse.

The story
For years the room at 1045 Haywood Road was the Odditorium, and Explore Asheville still files it as the home of the city's punk, hardcore, alternative and metal scene — a haven for oddball sets and cast-offs where you grab a PBR and hear deafeningly loud local rock and roll. It came out the other side of the Odditorium era under new owners and one syllable lighter: The Odd. The premise did not change. The bar bills itself as part music venue, part oddities museum, and describes what it wants to be as a place for wicked good times, freakishly incredible events, and an anomaly of art and artifacts.
Physically that means murals by local artists running from pretty to genuinely unsettling, sideshow curiosities, taxidermy and memorabilia crowding the walls — and much of the collection carries a price tag, so the skeleton you have been staring at is technically inventory. Carnival and freak-show motifs run through the decor. There is a stage, a kitchen, a full bar and outdoor seating. The business is LGBTQ-owned, a Mountain BizWorks graduate, and took a Mountain Xpress Best of WNC nod in 2023; bands route their booking requests through Matt Evans.
The calendar is the argument for the place. All genres of music, plus drag, burlesque, comedy, freak shows, trivia, poetry, dance parties, art shows, flea markets and male go-go nights; Saturdays have carried both a drag bill and the drag brunch Panties in a Brunch, and Terraoke runs free karaoke every Wednesday. Bold Burlesque booked its five-year show here in August. Doors open at 3 p.m. on weekdays, noon Saturday and 10 a.m. Sunday, and the room runs to 2 a.m. every night of the week.
What it's like
Park on Haywood or a side street and walk into a dive that has been decorated by someone with a collection problem — taxidermy, murals, carnival ephemera, a good deal of it for sale. Order at the bar; the kitchen is open and Go Local cardholders get 10% off food, alcohol excluded. Early evening is quiet enough to actually look at the walls. By 9 the stage is the point, and the room reorganizes itself around whatever is loading in: a metal bill, a drag revue, karaoke, a comedy set. Some bills are 21+ and some are ticketed, so check the calendar before you commit anyone underage. Bring cash for tipping performers — drag and burlesque run on it — and note that the bar keeps going to 2 a.m. after the last set.

Where do I park?
Street parking on Haywood Road and the residential side streets; there's no lot. It's the far West Asheville end of Haywood, roughly a 10-minute drive from downtown, so a rideshare home is the cheaper plan on a 2 a.m. night.
Can I buy the taxidermy?
A lot of it, yes — much of the collection of curiosities, taxidermy and memorabilia on the walls is for sale, and local artists' work turns over. Ask at the bar rather than unhooking anything yourself.
Is there food?
