Entry No. 21 — the Atlanta file — filed under: midnight movie

Plaza Theatre

Atlanta's longest continuously operating independent movie theater — an art deco house that opened December 23, 1939, with 'The Women' — turns midnight into a standing ritual: the fan group LDOD has run a live shadow-cast Rocky Horror Picture Show every Friday at midnight since 2000, and the Splatter Cinema series pairs vintage horror screenings with a lobby set-dressed to recreate a gruesome scene from that night's film.

The move: Show up before midnight on a Friday for the Rocky Horror shadow cast — bring a prop bag, expect the crowd to talk back to the screen — or check the calendar for a Splatter Cinema horror night and see what grisly tableau volunteers have built in the lobby.
